How has the last year been for you as a contractor? It’s undeniable that this year has been full of ups and downs: from the delay to the IR35 private sector reforms to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s likely that your working practices have changed significantly and you may be working quite differently than how you thought you would be.

We’d like to invite you to share your experiences over the last 12 months in this year’s Contractor Attitude Survey.

What is the Contractor Attitude Survey?

As thought leaders in the industry, we’re heavily invested in the wants and needs of the flexible workforce, and we believe this survey is a good chance for them to be heard. Our top concern is that we’re meeting the changing needs of contractors, supporting the self-employed and that we understand the impact that the current climate has had on your working practices.

Our annual contractor survey is a chance for contractors and freelancers to share how they’ve found the last 12 months: whether it’s legislation updates, changes to the marketplace or any other insight about what it means to a part of the flexible workforce, we’re inviting you to share it.

What did last year’s results reveal?

Last year, we uncovered some interesting insights from the industry, including:

  • Almost half of respondents (48.1%) believe that the impending private sector IR35 reforms are a positive opportunity for many contractors, whilst just over 40% are of the opinion that it worked in the public sector, so will work in the private sector too.
  • When looking to find a new contract, the majority (69.4%) reported they would look to their contacts and network, whilst 62.2% would source work through a recruiter and 36.6% would turn to repeat business and ex-clients.
  • More than 60% of contractors currently have a mortgage and less than 13% collectively responded that it was ‘difficult’ or ‘very difficult’ to get a mortgage. Similarly, nearly three quarters (74%) admitted that they had no trouble taking out loans as a contractor.
