Interim professionals working in the UK energy sector are glowing after being crowned the highest paid in their field.
The latest survey by recruiter Russam GMS reveals that temporary managers on assignment with energy companies can command an average daily rate of £945. This is streets ahead of the financial services and IT sectors, which offer pay packets of £804 and £754 respectively.
On the whole, the average daily rate for interims has increased from £638 in June 2014 to £651 this year. This represents a jump of 11% from five years ago, when typical pay stood at £579.
The study also found that interims who sit on company boards are unsurprisingly the highest paid, able to command daily rates of £858. General managers can expect to receive £827, followed by auditors on £785 and IT specialists on £778.
Many of the respondents considered themselves to be “career interims”, with 35% stating they wouldn’t take a permanent role.
Interestingly, the pay rates for interim workers seem to buck the national trend – with professionals in central England (£649) earning more than their southern counterparts (£612). Those who work overseas can expect to make £746 a day.
It wasn’t all good news, however, as the report revealed a yawning gulf between the pay rates of male and female interims. The average wage packet for men stands at £662.64, almost £100 more than for women (£567.25).

It would be fantastic to see even more women reaping the benefits of this kind of career, especially in the space of organisational transformation.”
